The peculiar nature of Lagos State as a former Federal Capital and the trade hub of the country has continued to attract the influx of people from both far and near into the metropolis. This has put immense pressure on the existing social facilities, thereby metamorphosing into various social problems. It is in recognition of this immense challenge that the Governor of Lagos State, His Excellency, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu carved out the Lagos State Ministry of Youth, Sports and Social Development in 1999 out of the erstwhile Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development and the defunct Ministry of Information, Culture and Sports.In order to realize the objectives of its creation, the Ministry is saddled with three major statutory responsibilities i.e.

(a) Provision of Social Welfare Services,

(b) Youth Development and

(c) Sports Develop

 

Linkage of Schools, Youth and Sports as launch pad for taking Sports as Profession

To approach the problem of Youth Development through fighting unemployment by

Interfacing with the Ministry of Commerce and Industry to exploit existing programmes in the areas of micro, mini and small scale industry\

Interfacing with the Ministry of Agriculture to exploit the establishment of Agricultural Schemes

Interfacing with Ministries of Work and Infrastructures, Environment and Housing to establish work gangs particularly in the areas of road and infrastructure maintenance, environmental sanitation and servicing of our Housing programmes

To interface with the Ministry of Education to continue to lay a solid foundation for our youth through functional education curriculum with a strong moral and patriotic content

To promote the New Face of Lagos Youth, educated, clean and upwardly mobile

Re orientation of the Youth to redirect their vision and goals to give them hope for sustainable self development

Institution of School Work to discover and develop innate skills for Entrepreneurship

 

To put in place a Social Development programme that consolidates on existing massive infrastructure in place with a view to

Optimizing Land Use to provide enough resources the Social Development activities

Strengthening Social Development for proactive engagement of Social disorder to a new Social dawn

To continue to increase the capacity  of its infrastructures as correctional centres

To increase the quality of service delivery at its several Social Centres taking care of the less privileged, the socially distressed and disadvantaged

To engender a Volunteer Service Scheme for Social Care

Decentralisation of Social Welfare Structure to allow for more private homes and Institutions

Interfacing with NGOs with a view to increasing capacities to improve Social and Family Values

Interfacing with the Private Sector for the purpose of adopting Social Welfare Institutions

 

 

Consideration of the Sports Policy

Establishment of Sporting Structures as approved by the Government in the Sports Policy

Preparation of a bid for hosting of African Beach Soccer 2008

Repositioning the Lagos State Youth Council to take on its image as the New Face of Lagos Youth

Inter Ministerial cooperation to set achievable targets for the Youth Empowerment Programmes in Industry, Works and Infrastructures, Housing and Environment

Expansion of Rehabilitation Centre at Tekunle

Preparation of an Optimum Land Use Programme for Government’s consideration of existing Social Development Infrastructures
