A clarion call has gone to parents who have children who require special care to encourage them by ensuring that they go to school and get good education.

The call was made today by the Chairman of Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board, (SUBEB) Mrs. Gbolahan Daodu at the 30th Founder’s Day Anniversary/Graduation and prize giving day of Wesley Schools I and II for the Hearing Impaired.

The Chairman while addressing the gathering at the event implored parents of children with special needs not to harbour negative thoughts about the future of such children as they too can reach any height attainable by other normal children as seen by graduates of the school who are professionals in various fields of endeavour.

In addition, Mrs Daodu urged those who are able to partner with the state government to support the school so as to move it to greater heights.

The Dean of Education, Federal College of Education (Special), Oyo, Adeyemi Shokale who was the Guest Speaker at the event spoke on “Ability in Disability” in addition to encouraging parents to give all necessary support to their children with special needs, gave the example of Helen Keller, who defied all her challenges and authored 14 books and was the first deaf and blind person to earn a University degree.

Those honoured at the ceremony include an erstwhile Minister of Transport, Rear Admiral Jubril Ayinla, City Mission Methodist Church, Surulere and some parents of the students who have continually supported the school

At the event, various presentations including exhibition of arts and crafts, choreography, and Cultural dances were made by the pupils despite their challenges thus displaying that “there is ability in disability”.

The Wesley School for the Hearing Impaired, the first of its kind in Nigeria, was commissioned on September 22, 1962 as a result of the support of a group led by the then Oba of Lagos, Oba Adeniji Adele.
